I wrote this on Valentine’s Day and only posted it today.
Today is Valentine’s Day. I’m sitting in an airport lounge waiting for my flight home. I’ve been at a conference the past three days focused on growing our business.
I’m not usually observant of the “Hallmark” holidays. Sometimes I’ll buy a card for my wife and maybe go out for dinner. More often than not we stay home and don’t do anything. Today is different. Sitting here for the last hour or so I’ve been thinking about how blessed I am that she is my wife. It will be almost midnight before I get home. I hope I make while it is still Valentine’s Day. When we were married our pastor charged me before our families, friends and God to love my wife. He reminded me that I had chosen to love her. That love is a verb. It is active. I have often done a pitiful job loving my wife. But I am committed to loving her and thankful every day to have the opportunity to do so even when it’s difficult. No; especially when it’s difficult.
What we do in business is a lot like the relationship between a husband and wife. It doesn’t always “feel” good. In fact sometimes it feels pretty lousy. Like marriage, in your business you have chosen to commit. That means that whether it feels good or not you are “married”. Don’t forget this. There will most certainly be difficult times. There will be lean times. There will be times when it just doesn’t make sense and you question why. At these times it is critical to remember your commitment. When you love your spouse actively you stay “in love” with your spouse. When you stay committed to your business in a similar way you stay excited about your business, even when it doesn’t make since to you. See it through and reap the rewards of the relationship. Your business is worth it.
What a wonderful post! I'll have my husband read this :)
